As part of the introduction of the new residency management system, being implemented as of July 9th, 2012, a telephone consultation service was set up last October to handle questions. Originally the service was supposed to end at the end of March, 2012, but due to the volume of questions they have decided to extend it until next year, and now they offer service in languages other than Japanese.
This service is provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and will be operating between April 2nd, 2012 and March 29th, 2013, Monday to Friday (excluding holidays) from 8:30am to 5:30pm. The operators number 10 people, all with extensive customer service and data handling skills, and they offer service in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese.
The service is intended to handle general questions about the new residency management system, specifically about the procedures and policies of the system itself and how to comply with it. Inquiries about your own personal resident card or file will be directed to the municipal office in charge of your area.
