Strange and fun! An illustrated guide to modern ceramics for families

Period: July 21st to September 23rd

This exhibition is an introduction to the world of modern ceramics aimed at families, designed as a fun ‘illustrated guide’ to help everyone understand the seemingly ‘confusing’ subjects. On display will be 78 pieces combining everyday subjects such as plants, animals, and clothing, as well as pieces that ‘seem like a vessel but aren’t’. The exhibition space has been divided into 6 categories, ‘animal?’, ‘person?’, ‘in my closet?’, ‘landscape through a kaleidoscope?’, ‘vessel?’, and ‘plant?’, so that you can enjoy perusing the fun illustrated guide while answering quizzes.

During summer vacation you can do more than just ‘look’ at these pieces! In collaboration with arts students from the University of Tsukuba we will be holding hands-on workshops every week. Why not come as a family and enjoy sessions such as explanations of the University of Tsukuba’s Ishii Collection, chances to actually handle pieces in the ‘touch and talk’ session, and the opportunity to make your own animal out of clay? The ‘12th National Children’s Ceramics Exhibit in Kasama’ will also be held from August 2nd to 8th, with many works on display.
