The mysterious shape of livings things. Various art pieces that have been derived from that shape, as well as the original living thing, will be on display at Tsukuba Botanical Garden. Ernst Haeckel, the one gave an artistic quality to the form of living things, was both a biologist and a physician, and had aimed to be an artist from a very young age. His work, “Kunstformen der Natur” (Art Forms of Nature), is of the highest artistic quality, had a huge effect on artists in the early 20th century, and is even said to have been one of the motivations for the art nouveau movement. This exhibit will incorporate both Haeckel’s works of art, as well as the living sample or picture from which the piece was inspired from. We hope that visitors will be able to appreciate the high artistic quality derived from the form of living things, and gain an insight into how Haeckel perceived them.
