Tsuchiura Curry Festival

All the curries from Hokkaido to Kyushu!  Yokozuka Navy Curry (Kanagawa Prefecture), Furano Omlet Curry (Hokkaido), Kitamoto Tomato Curry (Saitama Prefecture), Kurobe Dam Curry (Nagano Prefecture), Mojikoyaki Curry (Fukuoka Prefecture), and more.  Mass reservation for first place curry is also available.

Oarai Dance Festival & Anglerfish Festival

This year the Oarai Dance Festival will be held on November 14th, and the Anglerfish Festival on November 15th. At the Dance Festival, there will be a children’s dance contest and stalls selling Oarai’s B Grade gourmet food. At the Anglerfish Festival you can watch a demonstration of the tsurushigiri method of butchering anglerfish, purchase Anglerfish Soup, and much more.

Oarai Dance Festival

When: November 14th, 9am – 4pm
Where: The lawn in front of Oarai Marine Tower, Oarai
Parking: Please use the town-managed parking lot near the Marine Tower

Throughout the day a children’s dancing contest and a variety of other events will be held on stage. Anglerfish Soup will also be on sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to charity, and visitors will have the opportunity to try tarashi-yaki (dipping and frying). Stalls will be set up selling food, drink, and crafts.

Oarai Anglerfish Festival

When: November 15th, 9am – 3pm
Where: The lawn in front of Oarai Marine Tower and the shopping district, Oarai

2000 servings of Anglerfish Soup (100 yen for one bowl, with a portion of the proceeds going to charity) will be on sale at the venue, as well as authentic Anglerfish Hotpot and other local specialties of Oarai.
There will also be a number of performances on stage, including demonstrations of the anglerfish tsurushigiri butchering technique, folk entertainment, an Ultraman X show, the Oarai High School marching band the Blue Hawks, and displays from the image characters from a variety of municipalities.

There will also be a talk show by the cast of the upcoming Girls und Panzer film set in Oarai, which comes to theatres on November 21st, and a Girls und Panzer decorated car contest in the shopping district.

42nd Annual Iwai Masakado Festival

When: November 8, 2015, 10am – 4pm
Where: Iwai Shopping District Pedestrian Precinct, Kokuo Shrine

The Masakado Festival is a celebration to revive the valiant figure of Iwai’s local hero, Taira no Masakado, in modern times. The festival takes place each year on the second Sunday of November. It begins with a prayer for victory at Kokuo Shrine. 100 warriors will march in the grounds to the beat of drums played by the Kanda Myojin Shrine Masakado Taiko Troupe and worship at the shrine.

At Iwai Shopping District local junior high school students will give a kyudo (Japanese archery) demonstration, and a parade lead by children with bold armoured warriors and elegant princesses will proceed through the street, followed by a Kanda-bayashi musical accompaniment (Kanda-bayashi has been designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Heritage). At the end of the festival, the Kanda-bayashi floats will compete at the main stage, joined by the Iwai Masakado Kanda Myojin Taiko Troupe.

Hitachi Aki Soba Festival Satoyama Fair

When: November 7 – 8, 10am – 3pm
Where: Yamabuki Exercise Park, Hitachiota (1 Arajuku-cho, Hitachiota)
Access: Shuttle buses departing from Hitachiota Station on the Suigun Line. By foot it is 15 minutes from the station.

The Kanasago area is the home of Hitachi Aki Soba, known for its characteristic fragrance, sweetness, and high quality. Every year when the November batch of Hitachi Aki Soba is made the Hitachi Aki Soba Festival is held in Hitachiota City.

Sample shinsoba (soba made from the new buckwheat crop) at the Hitachi Aki Soba Eat and Walk Corner, wander through the food, drink, and craft stalls, and check out Hitachiota’s local products at the Specialty Products Corner, watching the folk performances.
